mahogany wood - antique furniture

Have you every purchased a piece of Mahogany furniture?  What exactly is mahogany?  According to the dictionary, mahogany is a hard reddish-brown wood from the genus Swietnenia mahagoni. In the 18th Century, this wood was found in places like the West Indies, Florida and Cuba, but by the 19th Century, with the original sources of this wood depleted, furniture makers started using Honduran or Belize mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla).

DUMB MIKEY

Mikey goes to his office one morning as he did most mornings, even though we all know Mikey doesn’t really do anything. In any case, he is sitting in his office crying when his assistant comes in and asks him what is wrong.  Mikey says, “earlier this morning, I received a phone call that my mother has passed away.”  “I’m so sorry” his assist says, “maybe you should go home for the day.”  However, Mikey refuses because he said he would feel better doing something and keeping his mind occupied.

ill gotten gains auctioned off - in the news

On Saturday, November 10, 2007, Sloan & Kenyon Auctioneers of Washington auctioned off the ill gotten belongings of Barbara Bullock in Chevy Chase, Maryland.  For those of you who may not remember, Ms Bullock is serving a 6 ˝ year prison sentence for stealing more than $4.5 million from the Washington Teacher’s Union in 2004.  She used part of the money to buy 19th Century Tiffany Silver, furs and handbags.  Money recouped from the auction was returned to Union coffers.  In addition to the stolen loot, Sloan & Kenyon had works by Warhol and Foujita as well as strands of hair from Washington and Lincoln.

NOVA-Antiques.com was designated as a resource for antiques and collectibles flea markets in an article published in the Weekend Section of the Washington Post on May 6, 2005

pancho villa's guns auctioned

American folk hero or Mexican Revolutionary Pancho Villa always carried guns.  Two of the guns were auctioned off this weekend in Texas where organizers say they fetched less than expected.  A Remington Model 1875 single action revolver with his real name (Doreteo Arango) engraved on the barrel sold for $18,000 and a rifle owned by Villa was auctioned off for about $7,500.  The two day auction in Texas featured late 19th century guns and Western memorabilia as well as native American items.

Today, all species of the Swietenia genus are protected and cannot be used.  Most “mahogany” today comes from the genus Khaya from Africa, which is closely related to the Swietenia genus.  There are also other woods that manufacturers use that have a similar grain to mahogany and which are stained to imitate mahogany.  However, true mahogany is the choice of many furniture makers because of its durability and workability as well as its beauty when polished.

real bs

It took a year to find someone in the state of Texas who would get excited about this controversial and provocative project then actually stay with it and be part of it.  Many responded, but most all fell aside after their initial enthusiasm.  But, the year's passing showed changed attitudes even in Texas and, finally, it is launched!
